Early Bird vs. Late Shopper

One of the most debated topics in the flea market community: should you arrive early or late? The answer depends on what you're looking for.

The Early Bird Strategy

Arrive when the market opens (or before)

Pros:

  • First pick of the best items
  • Less competition for rare finds
  • Sellers are fresh and happy to chat
  • Better parking/transport options

Cons:

  • Prices tend to be firmest in the morning
  • Not all sellers may be fully set up
  • You might miss late-arriving sellers

The Late Shopper Strategy

Arrive 1-2 hours before closing

Pros:

  • Sellers are more willing to negotiate
  • Bundle deals are easier to get
  • Some sellers would rather sell cheap than pack up
  • Less crowded, more relaxed browsing

Cons:

  • Best items may already be gone
  • Some sellers pack up early
  • Reduced selection overall

The Sweet Spot

For most shoppers, arriving about 1 hour after opening is the ideal compromise:

  • All sellers are set up
  • The biggest crowd rush has passed
  • There's still great selection
  • Prices are starting to become negotiable

Seasonal Timing

Spring (March-May)

  • Season opener markets often have hoarded winter finds
  • Estate sale items flood the market
  • Great time for garden and outdoor items

Summer (June-August)

  • Peak season with the most markets
  • Holiday markets and tourist areas
  • Extended hours at many markets
  • Best variety and selection

Fall (September-November)

  • End-of-season deals
  • Sellers clearing summer inventory
  • Great for winter clothing and home items
  • Fewer crowds, better bargaining

Winter (December-February)

  • Indoor markets only in Scandinavia
  • Christmas-themed markets
  • Smallest selection but most motivated sellers
  • Antique and vintage specialists dominate

Day of the Week

  • Saturday markets tend to have more sellers and variety
  • Sunday markets are often more relaxed with better deals
  • Weekday markets (rare) offer the least competition
